This weeks marks the end of the Las Vegas Food Hub Studio. My partners and I presented our solution to a very unique urban problem, food. Through education and outreach, we are able to create a hub in the network of fresh foods. By creating a network of producers and consumers, we are able to create a transparency from farm to plate. This project aims to increase the availability of fresh local food in the Las Vegas area, as well as educate on nutrition and wellness issues at a variety of age levels.
Our food hub features an interactive market integrates with to-go style food kiosks. These spaces are designed to remain flexible, and inherit a variety of uses. The education pods floating above allow for a more personable and private environment for education and small group activities.
One of the most interesting features of our food hub was almost a hidden treasure until review day. Because of Las Vegas' diversity, we wanted to exhibit this diversity in some way. The Spice Lab does just this, blending cultures through the use of spices. Customers are able to learn about these spices and also learn about new spices used in other cultures. This mixing chamber was one of the highlights of our final review, and proved to be a dynamic space that is truly unique to FoodLV.
This project was a very unique challenge, both on an urban and pedestrian scale. Given the growing entertainment features of the city, it was imperative to create an identity for the food hub. Through branding efforts and app design, we are able to visualize what these outreach efforts may look like.
In addition to this design project, we were also tasked with investigating the feasibility of having our project registered by the Living Building Challenge. With critical decisions regarding water use, energy use, and overall experience at a human scale, we can begin to implement systems that will make our building very sustainable.
This project wraps up my education here at Iowa State University. I would like to thank my professor, Ken McCown, for all of his hard work in making this idea a reality, as well as my group members for all of their hard work and dedication to FoodLV. It was truly a great experience!
